Gretchen has been commissioning buildings and the systems that serve them since 1992. She is privileged to have worked on what is acknowledged as the first third party commissioned project in the United States – Phase 1 of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, WA. Since that first project, Gretchen has commissioned over 20 million square feet at a construction cost of over $2.5 billion.
As a commissioning pioneer, Gretchen is credited with some industry “firsts”:
Founding member of the Building Commissioning Association (BCA)
Served on the BCA’s first elected Board of Directors for two terms, one as Vice President.
Was one of the first ten people in the nation, and the first woman, to be certified by the BCA as a Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP).
Was the first woman to be certified by NEBB as a Systems Commissioning Administrator (SCA) for HVAC and Plumbing systems. Received the highest test score to date at that time.
Also certified as an SCA in Fire Protection Systems, with the first group to receive certification.
Was among the first group to receive ACG certification as an Energy Management Professional.
Was the commissioning authority for the first K-12 school in the nation to receive a US Green Building Council LEED™ (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. The project received a Gold Rating.
Was the commissioning authority for the first Charlotte, NC project to receive a US Green Building Council LEED™ certification. The project received a Silver Rating.
Was the commissioning authority for the first Pfizer Pharmaceutical project to receive a US Green Building Council LEED™ certification. The project received a Silver Rating.
Was the commissioning project manager for the first LEED Platinum project in our Nation’s Capitol.
In addition to the above, Gretchen is a Registered Professional Engineer in Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, Texas, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Maryland and Florida . She was the chair of the BCA Association Development Committee; instrumental in bringing the commissioning industry to the East Coast. Gretchen served on the Building Commissioning Certification Board, the group that manages the certification, for 10 years as well as Chapter President for the BCA National Capital Chapter based in Washington, DC for 3 consecutive years. Gretchen received the 2007 President’s Award for dedication and volunteerism.
Gretchen has presented papers on commissioning in such venues as the National Conference on Building Commissioning, the Building Commissioning Association Expo, the Center for Building Intelligence, local ASHRAE, USGBC, AIA and BCA chapter meetings.
Gretchen is also active in her local community. She is a violinist with the Bedford Community Orchestra and served as Board of Directors Secretary/Treasurer for 8 years. Gretchen is a member of the Grandin Village Business Association and the Grandin Theater Foundation. The Grandin Theater, built in 1931, is the last independent theater in the Roanoke valley, and was recently renovated with funds raised by the Foundation. Gretchen also volunteered on the committee for the Firefighter Calendar, benefiting Charleston Animal Society's medical fund in Charleston, SC.
